Google Renames Gemini Gems to Skills, Spark Becomes Tasks
Google is making major changes to its Gemini AI ecosystem. The company is transitioning custom AI bots known as Gems to a new format called Skills, while its background AI agent Spark is appearing as Tasks in Gemini’s interface.
Starting November 17, 2026, personal Google accounts will begin transitioning their Gems to Skills. The new system is designed to let users apply multiple custom instructions within the same Gemini conversation. However, some existing Gems features may not yet be available in Skills.
Google’s Scheduled Actions can perform recurring tasks and deliver results at specified times, while Spark, now labeled Tasks in the interface, can handle more complex, multi-step workflows in the background. These features differ in their capabilities, availability, subscription requirements, and limits.
