NVIDIA on Monday introduced a new AI-focused chip designed to bring advanced artificial intelligence capabilities directly to laptops and desktop computers, intensifying competition with rivals such as Apple and Intel.

Speaking at the Computex conference in Taiwan, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said the new RTX Spark PC chip is part of a joint effort with Microsoft to "reinvent the PC" for the AI era. Developed with support from Taiwan's MediaTek, the chip enables AI agents to run locally on devices rather than relying heavily on cloud computing.

Industry analysts believe the technology could accelerate the adoption of agentic AI. Counterpoint Research co-founder Neil Shah said RTX Spark could transform traditional PCs into AI-powered personal computers, with private edge AI agents expected to become common in households in the coming years.

NVIDIA also highlighted its new VERA central processing unit (CPU), designed specifically for AI agents. Early adopters include OpenAI, Anthropic, and SpaceX. Huang said the Vera CPU opens access to a new $200 billion market and could become a major growth driver for the company.

Moving Toward Autonomous AI Agents

Huang's remarks came ahead of Computex, where leaders from some of the world's largest technology companies gathered to discuss the future of AI and computing.

Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon echoed Nvidia's vision, describing 2026 as the "year of agents." He said the industry is moving beyond AI systems that simply respond to prompts toward autonomous AI agents capable of operating independently.

According to Amon, this shift makes local edge computing increasingly important, as existing device architectures were built for user-initiated actions rather than always-on AI agents.

Huang also dismissed concerns that AI would reduce demand for software engineers, calling such fears "complete nonsense." He argued that AI boosts productivity and is driving increased hiring across the software industry.

The Computex trade show runs from June 2 to June 5 in Taipei.
