OpenAI Plans Major ChatGPT Upgrade as It Pushes Toward an AI ‘Super App’

OpenAI is preparing a major overhaul of ChatGPT that could transform the popular chatbot into a broader AI platform offering coding tools, AI agents and other services within a single app.

According to a Financial Times report, the company plans to launch a revamped version of ChatGPT in the coming weeks as part of its effort to strengthen its competitive position against rivals such as Anthropic and attract more business customers.

ChatGPT Moving Beyond Traditional Chat

The updated platform is expected to position ChatGPT as a “super app” that serves as a gateway to OpenAI’s growing portfolio of AI products. Instead of functioning solely as a chatbot, the platform could provide access to advanced tools, including OpenAI’s coding assistant Codex and AI-powered agents designed to perform tasks on behalf of users.

The move is also seen as part of OpenAI’s broader strategy to increase revenue and move closer to profitability ahead of a potential future public offering.

One senior OpenAI employee told the Financial Times that “Chat is dead,” suggesting the company sees AI assistants evolving beyond simple text-based conversations.

Focus on Personal AI Agents

Thibault Sottiaux, who leads OpenAI’s core product and platform division, said the company is working toward creating a personal AI agent capable of helping users across different aspects of their lives.

According to Sottiaux, the long-term goal is to develop an AI assistant that can support users with both personal and professional tasks, making ChatGPT a central hub for productivity and everyday activities.

Part of a Broader Strategy Shift

Reports about OpenAI’s super app ambitions first emerged in 2025. Since then, the company has been exploring ways to unify its expanding collection of AI products under a single platform.

Earlier reports suggested OpenAI was moving away from launching numerous standalone products and instead focusing on integrating its services more closely with ChatGPT. This strategy could make it easier for users to discover premium features while strengthening the platform’s position against competing AI ecosystems.

As competition in the AI industry intensifies, the upcoming ChatGPT overhaul could mark one of OpenAI’s most significant product changes since the chatbot's launch, further expanding its role from a conversational assistant to a comprehensive AI platform.
