Air Taxi Future Moves Closer as
Joby Conducts Real Route Flights in New York
Marking a major step toward commercial air taxi operations in the United States, Joby Aviation has begun the first-ever point-to-point demonstration flights in New York City. The tests come as the company nears final regulatory approval for its electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft, according to Reuters. Joby Aviation is conducting a week-long series of test flights across New York City, showcasing its electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft, known as eVTOLs.
The demonstrations are part of a Federal Aviation Administration pilot program announced in September 2025, designed to support the safe introduction of advanced air mobility systems. On April 28, 2026, a Joby aircraft took off from John F. Kennedy International Airport and landed at multiple locations within New York’s existing heliport network. These included Downtown Skyport, the West 30th Street Heliport, and the East 34th Street Heliport in Midtown Manhattan. Additional test flights are planned all week.
The company and other air taxi developers are racing to get approvals and bring electric air taxi services to market. The goal is to meet rising demand for faster and more sustainable urban transportation options. These eVTOL aircraft are designed to take off and land vertically, making them suitable for short city trips and airport connections while avoiding road congestion. Joby has stated that it aims to connect Lower Manhattan and Midtown Manhattan with JFK Airport Global Trends JUNE 2026 TW 05 in under 10 minutes. By road, the same journey can take more than an hour during peak traffic conditions in New York City.
The company also said it is progressing through the final stages of Federal Aviation Administration certification. This follows the recent flight of its first conforming aircraft, which is a required step before FAA pilots can conduct further certification testing.
According to Joby, the New York demonstration builds on earlier piloted test flights conducted across the San Francisco Bay Area. The company added that the current campaign places the aircraft in real operational routes within one of the world’s most complex urban environments, allowing it to evaluate performance, safety, and acoustic impact in real conditions. The pilot program was initiated following an executive order signed in June 2025 by former United States President Donald Trump. Several countries, including India, China, and the United Arab Emirates, are also accelerating efforts to deploy eVTOL technology, with early passenger services expected as soon as this year.
In 2022, Delta Air Lines invested 60 million dollars in Joby Aviation, acquiring a minority equity stake. The partnership aims to eventually provide air taxi services connecting major airports in cities such as New York and Los Angeles.
