Social Media Feeds Become More Personalized With User-Controlled AI
Social media platforms are increasingly giving users direct control over the algorithms that determine what appears in their feeds. The shift marks a significant change from the traditional model where platforms largely decided what content users would see.
For years, recommendation systems relied heavily on user activity such as likes, follows, shares, and watch time. While users could influence their feeds indirectly, platforms ultimately controlled how content was ranked and delivered.
Now, companies are introducing AI-powered tools that allow users to actively shape their recommendations by specifying the topics, interests, and content categories they want to see more or less of.
The move reflects a broader effort to make social media feeds more personalized and transparent. For users, it offers greater control over content discovery. For platforms, it creates new opportunities to boost engagement by delivering more relevant recommendations.
Threads Introduces "Your Algo"
Meta-owned Threads recently launched a feature called "Your Algo," expanding on its earlier "Dear Algo" initiative introduced in February.
Previously, users could influence recommendations by posting public messages such as "Dear Algo, show me more posts about podcasts." The new feature allows users to make those preferences privately without publishing a post.
Users can request more or less content around specific topics and choose whether those preferences remain active for one, three, or seven days. For example, someone can request more sports content while reducing stressful news from their feed.
Instagram Expands Algorithm Controls
Instagram has also expanded its "Your Algorithm" tool across Feed, Explore, and Reels.
The feature allows users to see which topics Instagram believes they are interested in and adjust those interests directly. Users can indicate subjects they want to see more frequently or reduce from their recommendations.
Instagram chief Adam Mosseri has previously noted that advances in large language models can make recommendation systems more transparent by helping users understand why content is being shown and allowing them to communicate preferences more clearly.
TikTok Refines Content Preferences
TikTok has been offering recommendation controls through its "Manage Topics" feature since 2024.
The tool allows users to adjust their interest levels across categories such as sports, travel, food, current affairs, humor, and entertainment. Users can increase or reduce the amount of content they receive from each category using simple sliders.
In 2025, TikTok enhanced the system with AI-powered Smart Keyword Filters. The feature automatically recognizes related terms and synonyms when filtering content. For example, filtering out content related to "remodeling" can also reduce videos containing terms such as "renovation" or similar variations.
The growing adoption of user-controlled recommendation tools suggests social media platforms are moving toward a more interactive model where algorithms act less like broadcasters and more like personalized assistants. As AI becomes increasingly integrated into content discovery, users are gaining greater influence over how their digital experiences are shaped.
