A Single Scan Future: Bangla QR Powers Cashless Bangladesh Vision
Bangladesh’s push toward a cashless economy is gaining momentum as the nationwide rollout of Bangla QR, the country’s interoperable QR-based payment system, accelerates across merchant points. Introduced by Bangladesh Bank, the unified system is designed to replace multiple proprietary QR codes used by banks and mobile financial service providers with a single standardized code.
Under the central bank’s directive, all scheduled banks, mobile financial service (MFS) providers, payment service providers (PSPs), and payment system operators are required to phase out their existing QR systems and adopt Bangla QR at merchant outlets. The transition is intended to simplify digital payments, improve interoperability, and reduce operational complexity for both businesses and consumers.
Industry stakeholders say the shift is already underway. Speaking to TechWorld Bangladesh, Shamsuddin Haider Dalim, Head of Corporate Communications at bKash, said that the company has begun replacing existing QR codes with Bangla QR across merchant outlets in line with Bangladesh Bank’s cashless economy initiative.
“From the very beginning, bKash has been working to promote QR-based payments to make Bangladesh's digital payment ecosystem more robust, inclusive, and widely adopted. Continuing this commitment, bKash will remain an active partner in the government's efforts to build a cashless society,” he said.
Merchants on the ground also believe the system will reduce complexity in daily transactions. Sahil, a merchant in Mohammadpur, said the introduction of Bangla QR would make digital payments more convenient for both businesses and customers.
“With Bangla QR, we will no longer need to maintain separate QR codes for bKash, Rocket, or different banks. A single QR code will be enough for customers to pay using their preferred payment app, making transactions faster and easier,” he said.
Bangladesh Bank introduced Bangla QR in 2023 as part of its broader strategy to build an interoperable digital payment ecosystem. The system allows customers to make payments through any participating bank or mobile wallet using a single QR code, removing the need for multiple provider-specific codes at merchant locations.
Officials expect the system to strengthen digital payment adoption by improving user convenience and reducing barriers for small and medium-sized merchants. The initiative is also seen as a key step toward increasing financial transparency and expanding formal digital transaction channels across the country.
As adoption expands, Bangla QR is increasingly being positioned as a foundational infrastructure for Bangladesh’s long-term transition toward a cash-light economy.
