ChatGPT Sued Over Woman’s Death
OpenAI is facing a lawsuit from the parents of a 31-year-old woman who allegedly reduced her epilepsy medication after receiving advice from ChatGPT without medical supervision. The family claims the chatbot encouraged her to taper off lamotrigine, avoid discussing the changes with doctors, and dismiss concerns about symptoms she experienced during the process.
According to reports by The New York Times and The Times of India, Bowen Wang exchanged more than 270,000 messages with ChatGPT, including at least 158 expressions of concern about reducing her medication. She died two days after her final reported conversation with the chatbot. An autopsy reportedly found that the lamotrigine level in her blood was approximately one-fifth of the lower end of the therapeutic range.
Her neurologist reportedly said he would not have recommended discontinuing the medication given her medical history. OpenAI described the case as deeply distressing and said the GPT-4o model involved was an older version. The reports also state that GPT-4o was removed from ChatGPT on February 13, one day after her death.
Important: Never reduce, change, or stop prescription medication based on chatbot advice alone. Consult a qualified healthcare professional before making medication changes.
