Sony has announced a significant round of layoffs at Bungie, the studio behind the popular Destiny franchise, in a move that marks another major restructuring at the game developer as it shifts resources toward future projects.

The company did not disclose how many employees were affected but confirmed that the layoffs primarily impacted teams working on Destiny. Sony said it explored multiple alternatives before deciding that workforce reductions were necessary to align Bungie's resources with its current priorities and long-term business goals.

The announcement comes shortly after the release of the final content update for Destiny 2. Earlier this year, Bloomberg reported that Bungie was not actively developing Destiny 3 and that additional layoffs were expected, making the latest announcement less surprising for industry observers.

Changes Extend Beyond Destiny

The restructuring also affects developers working on Marathon, Bungie's upcoming extraction shooter, although Sony said the game will continue receiving content updates. According to the company, the remaining development team will focus on supporting Marathon while also working on future game projects currently in incubation.

The job cuts extend beyond Bungie itself, with layoffs also affecting parts of Sony's gaming division that supported the development of Destiny and Marathon.

Leadership changes are also underway. Bloomberg reported that Bungie studio head Justin Truman is stepping down as part of the restructuring.

Sony has faced pressure to improve Bungie's financial performance since acquiring the studio. Last year, the company acknowledged that Destiny 2 had fallen short of internal expectations for both sales and player engagement, raising questions about the long-term direction of one of its most valuable live-service franchises.

The latest layoffs reflect the broader challenges facing the gaming industry, where studios continue to restructure development teams, reduce costs, and reassess long-term projects amid changing market conditions. For Bungie, the changes signal a renewed focus on its next generation of games as Sony looks to strengthen the studio's future beyond Destiny.
