After more than a decade of anticipation, Rockstar Games has confirmed that Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA VI) will launch worldwide on November 19, 2026, with pre-orders expected to begin later this week.

The upcoming title is already one of the most anticipated video game releases in history. Beyond its release date, industry attention has also focused on the game's reported development budget, with analysts suggesting it could become the most expensive entertainment project ever created.

According to multiple industry estimates and media reports, GTA VI may have cost between $1.5 billion and $2 billion to develop. Rockstar Games and its parent company, Take-Two Interactive, have not officially disclosed the game's budget, so these figures remain unconfirmed.

If the estimates are accurate, GTA VI's production cost would exceed the budgets of several blockbuster Hollywood films, including Avatar, Avengers: Endgame, and Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Some reports have also compared the game's estimated budget with the construction cost of the Burj Khalifa, the world's tallest building, which is widely reported to have cost around $1.5 billion to build.

Development time is another area where GTA VI stands out. While construction of the Burj Khalifa took roughly six years, Rockstar Games has spent more than 12 years developing the next installment of its flagship franchise, following the release of Grand Theft Auto V in 2013.

Creating a modern open-world game on this scale requires far more than software programming. Development involves thousands of professionals across multiple disciplines, including game designers, software engineers, artists, animators, writers, voice actors, motion-capture performers, quality assurance testers, and AI specialists. Together, they build vast virtual environments, realistic character interactions, and complex gameplay systems that can take years to complete.

The long development cycle reflects growing ambitions across the video game industry, where blockbuster titles increasingly rival major Hollywood productions in both budget and production scale. As games become larger and more technologically advanced, studios are investing heavily in graphics, artificial intelligence, world-building, and online services to meet rising player expectations.

With its official release now approaching, GTA VI is expected to be one of the biggest launches in gaming history. Whether the reported budget estimates prove accurate or not, the title has already become a symbol of how modern game development has evolved into one of the world's largest and most expensive forms of entertainment.
