Google to let you change your Gmail address
Changing a long-held and sometimes unwanted Gmail address may become easier from 2026, according to a recently updated Hindi-language Google support page.
At present, Google generally does not allow users to change the “username” portion of a Gmail address (the part before @gmail.com), leaving most people to create a new account and rely on workarounds such as forwarding.
However, Google’s Hindi support documentation on changing a Google Account email states that, for some accounts ending in gmail.com, users can switch their account email to a new address ending in @gmail.com without affecting saved data, including items such as photos, messages and emails.
The same page says this change can be made only once every 12 months and up to three times in total.
The document also notes that while it is possible to switch a Google Account to a non-Gmail email address, doing so requires deleting the Gmail service from the account.
