Google Gemini Now Uses Gmail as a Source for Smarter Search and Response

Google has expanded the capabilities of its Ask Gemini in Drive feature by allowing it to access Gmail content alongside files and folders stored in Google Drive. The feature, which was first announced in March, is now generally available to eligible Google Workspace customers and Google AI subscribers.

According to Google, Ask Gemini in Drive can now use Gmail as a source when answering user queries. This allows the AI assistant to search across emails, documents, and folders to provide more comprehensive responses. To use the feature, users need a Google AI Pro, Google AI Ultra, Business, or Enterprise subscription. Users can select Gmail as a source from the left-side panel in Drive and then click the “Ask Gemini” button to submit questions.

For example, a user can ask Gemini to find an email containing approval for a specific project, and the AI will search relevant Gmail conversations along with related files and folders.

Google said the update enables users to have high-context, multi-turn conversations with Gemini while drawing information from different sources within their Google Workspace environment. The company noted that combining emails, files, and folders can help deliver more accurate and useful answers.

The Gmail integration has now exited beta testing and is available to eligible Workspace customers and Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers.
