Tired of Google AI Overviews? Here’s How to Reduce Them

Google is increasingly integrating artificial intelligence across its ecosystem, embedding its Gemini AI features into Search, Gmail, Google Drive, Docs, and other widely used services. While these tools are designed to improve productivity and streamline digital tasks, many users say the constant presence of AI features feels intrusive and difficult to avoid.

Although Google does not offer a single “off switch” for its AI systems, users can reduce or partially disable many AI-driven features through account settings and configuration changes.

Turning Off Google Workspace Smart Features

One of the most effective ways to reduce AI integration is by disabling Google Workspace smart features. These settings affect Gmail, Google Drive, Docs, Sheets, and Slides.

However, disabling them comes with trade-offs. Users lose access to several convenience features, such as smart email-to-calendar integration and personalized search results.

To adjust these settings:

Users must sign in to their Gmail account, open the settings menu, and navigate to “See all settings.” Under the General tab, there is an option for “Google Workspace smart features,” where users can manage and disable smart features across Google products.

Once turned off, many AI-powered enhancements in Workspace apps will be reduced, but not fully removed.

Google AI Overviews Cannot Be Fully Disabled

Even after adjusting Workspace settings, Google’s AI Overviews in Search remain active. These AI-generated summaries appear at the top of search results and are increasingly integrated into Google Search globally.

Google currently does not provide a universal setting to completely disable AI Overviews. However, users have a few partial workarounds.

Disabling Google Labs Experiments

Some users can access experimental AI features through Google Labs. Within Labs settings, users may find an option related to AI Overviews and similar experiments. Turning this off may reduce the frequency of AI-generated summaries, although it does not fully eliminate them.

Reports suggest that results may vary depending on region and account settings.

Using Search Query Workarounds

Some users have found that adding “-ai” to search queries can reduce the appearance of AI-generated summaries in results. This method works inconsistently but may provide a more traditional search experience in some cases.

Another alternative is adjusting search filters or using different search engines that do not integrate generative AI summaries as heavily.

The Trade-Off Between AI Convenience and Control

Google’s AI integration is deeply embedded across its ecosystem, meaning many features are not independently removable without affecting other services. Disabling smart features can reduce AI presence but may also remove useful automation tools that many users rely on.

This creates a balancing act for users who prefer a more traditional, minimal interface while still benefiting from Google’s productivity ecosystem.
