Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky to
Launch New AI Lab Focused on User Experience and Design
Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky is preparing to launch a new artificial intelligence lab, marking a significant step into the increasingly competitive AI research landscape.
According to a report from Bloomberg and confirmation from sources familiar with the matter, Chesky plans to back a dedicated AI lab focused on building new systems and approaches to artificial intelligence, particularly around user interaction and product design.
The move reflects growing frustration among some Silicon Valley leaders with the capabilities of current frontier AI models. While Airbnb has already integrated AI-powered coding tools internally, the company has so far avoided formal partnerships with major large language model providers, with Chesky previously stating that existing systems were not yet fully ready for Airbnb’s needs.
Chesky’s involvement in AI development is not new. He has had a long-standing relationship with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, dating back to their early connections through Y Combinator. Over the years, Chesky has reportedly advised Altman on company scaling and public communications, and even played a role in stabilizing leadership during internal turbulence at OpenAI.
Despite those close ties, the new AI lab signals Chesky’s entry into a space that overlaps with companies he has previously supported. The initiative is expected to explore how AI systems can be better designed for end-user experiences, an area Chesky has emphasized throughout his leadership at Airbnb.
However, Chesky himself is not expected to directly run the lab. He will remain focused on his role as Airbnb CEO, while the lab is likely to be led by a separate hire.
The project places Chesky alongside a growing number of tech founders launching independent AI initiatives, as competition intensifies across both model development and application-layer innovation.
