Google Turns Aggressive in AI Market with Subscription Fee Cut

Price competition in the AI services market has reached a new level. Google has reduced the monthly fee for its budget-focused AI subscription plan, AI Plus, from $7.99 to $4.99. At the same time, the company has doubled storage capacity for users from 200GB to 400GB, offering greater value at a lower cost.

Launched in January this year, the plan was primarily designed for individual users and students. However, the latest price reduction suggests that Google has adopted a more aggressive strategy to attract a broader user base. Bikash Kansal, product head for Google's Gemini AI subscription services, said the expanded storage benefit would be rolled out to all users in phases.

The AI Plus plan includes features such as the video-generation tool Omni Flash, the creative workspace Google Flow, and the research assistant NotebookLM. In addition, Google continues to offer higher-priced plans - AI Pro and AI Ultra - for users requiring higher usage limits.

According to analysts, the move is not merely a discount on a single product but also signals the future direction of competition across the AI industry. Chi-Hua Chien, co-founder of Goodwater Capital, believes that at every major technological shift, infrastructure-focused companies gradually become commoditised, leading to shrinking profit margins over time. He noted that a similar trend is now emerging in the AI sector.

Such competition had already begun in emerging markets. Last year, OpenAI introduced ChatGPT Go in India at a comparatively lower price point. Google later followed with its own affordable AI plans in the market. The company is now applying a similar strategy in the United States.

However, Anthropic remains relatively behind in terms of pricing strategy. The company has yet to introduce a budget plan or region-specific pricing. But if rivals continue to cut prices, maintaining this position could become increasingly difficult.

In the AI services market, competition is no longer defined solely by technological capability; pricing has also become a critical factor. As technology giants race to attract users with more features at lower costs, the battle for market share is expected to intensify further.
