Google is rolling out a major update to enhance its smart home technology. With this update, Google Home cameras will be able to identify people not only by their faces but also by their clothing and physical characteristics. This is expected to reduce misidentifications and make notifications more accurate.

The update, which began rolling out on June 23, enhances the “Familiar Faces” feature. Previously, the system relied solely on facial recognition. Now, it will also consider additional non-biometric cues, such as body shape and clothing color, allowing it to recognize individuals even when they are not looking directly at the camera.

Google has also improved the Familiar Faces library, which will now update automatically. By incorporating newer photos of household members, the system can reduce incorrect notifications caused by outdated data.

In addition, Google’s AI-powered video event descriptions have gained new capabilities. The system can now detect and include nearby sounds - such as dog barking, alarms, or footsteps - in event summaries, even if the source of the sound is not visible on camera. This enhancement is expected to make home security monitoring more effective.

Version 4.20 of the Google Home app also introduces “System Health Alerts.” Through Nest thermostats, users will receive early warnings if their home’s heating or cooling system encounters problems. The update also adds improved support for Matter-compatible smart switches.

With these enhancements, Google aims to make its smart home ecosystem more accurate, intelligent, and user-friendly.
