WhatsApp, the Meta-owned messaging service with a user base exceeding three billion, is set to ban general-purpose artificial intelligence assistants, such as ChatGPT and Perplexity, from its platform, a move that will effectively clear the field for its in-house model, Meta AI.

The new restrictions come via an update to the WhatsApp Business API terms, with the new policy taking effect on January 15, 2026.

Under the revised terms, the platform will strictly prohibit "providers and developers of artificial intelligence or machine learning technologies," including large language models and generative AI assistants, from using the WhatsApp Business Solution if their technology functions as a standalone chatbot.

This change targets independent AI companies, including OpenAI, Perplexity, Luzia, and Poke, all of which have recently integrated their conversational models onto WhatsApp to interact with users.

OpenAI's ChatGPT, for instance, had previously launched a service on the platform capable of answering text queries, generating media, and interpreting voice notes and images. This feature contributed to a surge in message traffic.

Analysts see the ban as a strategic move by Meta to consolidate its position in the AI market by reserving one of the world's largest messaging platforms exclusively for its own assistant, Meta AI.

Notably, the updated rule will not affect businesses that utilize AI to automate customer service or enhance responses within their own dedicated chat channels. The prohibition applies only to general-purpose chatbots that offer a broad range of AI-powered features.

The policy will prevent independent AI developers from using WhatsApp’s vast user base as a distribution channel, ensuring that AI-driven message volume and user data are channeled through Meta's proprietary ecosystem.
