WhatsApp is reportedly working on two new features that could make the messaging platform more convenient for users. According to feature-tracking platform WABetaInfo, the upcoming additions include an online status indicator and enhanced chat backup management tools.

Both features are currently under development in beta versions of the app and are expected to roll out more widely after testing is completed.

Online Indicator Could Make Active Contacts Easier to Find

One of the most noticeable additions is a new online status indicator that will allow users to quickly identify which contacts are currently active on WhatsApp.

At present, users need to open an individual chat to see whether someone is online, as the status appears beneath the contact's name. With the new feature, a small green dot will reportedly appear on profile pictures within the contact list, making it easier to spot available contacts without opening a conversation.

The feature mirrors similar online indicators already available on platforms such as Facebook and Instagram. WhatsApp is also expected to provide privacy controls that allow users to hide their online indicator if they prefer not to share their active status with others.

New Backup Management Tools Target Storage Problems

The second feature focuses on improving how users manage chat backups.

According to the report, WhatsApp is developing a dedicated backup management section that will allow users to view existing backups, remove unnecessary files, and create duplicate backups when needed.

The feature could be particularly useful for users who frequently struggle with limited smartphone storage, as old backup files can consume significant space over time.

WhatsApp is also reportedly planning to include a shortcut to Google Drive storage settings, giving Android users easier access to cloud backup management and storage information.

Why These Features Matter

Both features address common user frustrations. The online indicator aims to make communication more efficient by helping users quickly identify who is available to chat, while the backup management tools provide greater control over storage and data management.

Together, they represent WhatsApp's continued effort to improve everyday usability without fundamentally changing the app's core messaging experience.

When Will the Features Launch?

WABetaInfo reports that both features remain under development and have not yet been released to all beta testers.

As a result, there is currently no official launch date. However, if testing proceeds successfully, the new tools are expected to arrive for Android users in a future WhatsApp update before potentially expanding to other platforms.

While still in development, the features suggest that WhatsApp is focusing on practical improvements that enhance both communication and device management for its billions of users worldwide.
