Elon Musk’s satellite internet service Starlink suffered a widespread outage on Monday, leaving tens of thousands of users offline worldwide before service was gradually restored.

According to the company’s status page, Starlink was “experiencing a service outage” early in the day, though no reason for the disruption was given.

Outage-tracking platform Downdetector logged nearly 40,000 complaints by 9:57 am ET, with 60% of users reporting loss of internet access, 39% citing a total blackout, and the remainder flagging degraded performance.

Reports of connectivity problems emerged across several US states, including Virginia, Louisiana, Indiana, and Washington. Users in other countries — including Colombia — also reported being affected.

While some subscribers lost service for only a few minutes, others experienced interruptions lasting more than 20 minutes before connections were restored.

Starlink, which is operated by Musk’s aerospace firm SpaceX, provides high-speed internet through a network of low-Earth orbit satellites. The service is particularly popular in rural and remote areas where traditional broadband infrastructure is limited.

By 1:15 am ET (0515 GMT) Monday, Downdetector reported fewer than 1,000 active complaints, down from a peak of more than 43,000 earlier in the day, indicating that service had returned for most users.

The company has not confirmed the cause of the outage or when full service was restored globally.
