June 3 (TechWorld) - Experts have advised caution when restarting refrigerators after electricity is restored following load shedding, warning that improper handling may damage appliances and reduce their lifespan.

During periods of frequent power outages, particularly in summer or severe weather, refrigerators often remain switched off for extended durations. Experts said switching appliances on immediately after power returns may expose compressors to voltage fluctuations.

Electrical engineer Mohammad Kaykobad said voltage instability is common when electricity is restored after outages, adding that sensitive appliances should not be turned on immediately. Experts recommend waiting a few minutes after power is restored before switching on refrigerators to allow voltage levels to stabilise. They also suggest the use of voltage stabilisers or surge protectors in areas with frequent fluctuations.

They caution that repeatedly turning refrigerators on and off during unstable supply conditions can place additional stress on compressors and internal components.

If a prolonged outage occurs, experts said internal refrigerator temperatures may rise, increasing the risk of food spoilage. Consumers are advised to check perishable items such as meat, fish and dairy products carefully before consumption.

Md. Fuad Hasan of the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology said proper usage practices are as important as appliance quality in ensuring long-term performance. He added that simple precautions after power interruptions can help reduce the risk of damage and maintenance costs.

Experts said maintaining stable usage habits, avoiding unnecessary door opening during outages, and waiting briefly after power restoration can help improve refrigerator safety and efficiency.
