Before buying electric vehicle: 5 points to check
Bangladesh’s electric vehicle (EV) market is expanding gradually, with interest increasing as drivers seek cleaner and more fuel-efficient alternatives.
However, experts advise that an EV should not be purchased solely on the assumption that running costs will be lower; several practical factors should be considered first.
Driving range per charge
One of the most important considerations is how far a vehicle can travel on a single charge. For typical city driving, a range of 200–300 kilometres is often sufficient, while longer journeys are generally easier with a range of 400–500 kilometres. The actual range can vary depending on driving habits, air conditioning use, and road conditions.
Charging access and infrastructure
Charging availability is another key issue. Charging stations are available in Dhaka and other major cities, but coverage on long routes has yet to be fully established. Many buyers are installing home chargers. Faster charging options can reduce downtime and make travel more convenient.
Price, taxes and incentives
Beyond the sticker price, buyers should factor in the cost of charger installation, routine upkeep and potential battery replacement. In Bangladesh, EV imports benefit from specific incentives and comparatively lower duties, which can make them more affordable—though experts stress the overall cost should be calculated carefully.
Maintenance and servicing
EVs typically have fewer moving parts, which can reduce maintenance expenses. However, battery failure can mean a costly replacement. Skilled mechanics and spare parts supply remain limited in the country.
Resale value and long-term considerations
Because EV technology is evolving rapidly, selling older models later may be more difficult. Options for battery recycling and reuse are also limited, making long-term planning an essential part of the purchase decision.
Experts say buying an EV can be a forward-looking choice, but only if it is made with clear information. They recommend assessing five core areas—range, charging access, total cost, servicing capacity and future management—to ensure the purchase is both economical and environmentally beneficial.
