FBI, MI5 Warn Chinese Spies Using
LinkedIn and Job Platforms to Gather Sensitive Information
Security agencies from the U.S., U.K., Australia, Canada, and New Zealand have warned that Chinese intelligence operatives are using professional networking and recruitment platforms, including LinkedIn, to gather sensitive information from Western professionals.
The advisory states that these operatives pose as recruiters, consulting firms, or HR representatives to build relationships and access valuable information. It was jointly issued by the FBI, MI5, and partner agencies from Australia, Canada, and New Zealand.
Fake Recruiters as Espionage Tool
Chinese operatives often create fake companies and recruitment profiles appearing to be outside China. They approach professionals with job offers, networking requests, or consulting opportunities to collect information benefiting Beijing's military, political, or economic interests.
Unlike cyberattacks, these operations rely on social engineering and human interaction, gradually building trust before seeking sensitive data.
Military and Government Personnel Among Key Targets
Primary targets include individuals with security clearances, military experience, and those in defense, government, critical infrastructure, or security fields, particularly in the Indo-Pacific. Journalists, academics, and researchers may also be targeted for their insights or access to non-public information.
Even unclassified information can become valuable when combined with other sources.
Growing Concerns Over Online Espionage
The advisory highlights how modern intelligence increasingly leverages digital platforms. Human intelligence remains a key method, using legitimate job and networking sites to approach targets in a seemingly routine way.
Professionals are urged to be cautious with unsolicited job offers or networking requests from unfamiliar organizations.
LinkedIn Responds
LinkedIn said fake accounts and identity misrepresentation violate its policies. The platform continues to identify and remove state-sponsored abuse while enforcing rules against fraudulent accounts. Authorities encourage individuals in government, defense, research, and strategic sectors to remain vigilant when engaging with unknown contacts online.
