Apple’s long-rumored foldable iPhone may finally be nearing launch, as newly discovered references in the iOS 27 developer beta suggest the company is actively preparing software support for a foldable device.

Researcher @M1Astra uncovered several code references within iOS 27, including terms such as “foldState,” “mechanicalAngleDegrees,” “angleDegrees,” and “MGGetLogicalDeviceDisplayCount.” These elements indicate that the operating system can recognize whether a device is folded, measure its opening angle, and manage multiple displays.

iOS 27 Points to Foldable Hardware

The newly discovered code strongly suggests Apple is developing software specifically designed for foldable hardware. The ability to track hinge positions and display configurations is considered essential for devices that transition between phone and tablet-like modes.

Since iOS 27 was officially introduced during WWDC 2026, the findings have fueled speculation that Apple's first foldable iPhone could debut alongside the company’s next generation of hardware later this year.

Entering a Mature Foldable Market

Apple would be entering a category already established by competitors. Companies such as Samsung and Huawei have spent years refining foldable smartphones, creating high expectations for Apple's eventual entry into the market.

One of the biggest challenges remains device thickness. Foldable phones often trade portability for larger displays, making design and engineering critical factors for consumer adoption.

Apple’s Thin Design Advantage

Apple has recently demonstrated its ability to create extremely thin devices. Last year’s iPhone Air measured just 5.6 millimeters thick, showcasing the company's progress in miniaturization and component integration.

If Apple applies similar engineering to a foldable device, analysts believe it could produce one of the thinnest foldable smartphones on the market. Two-folded iPhone Air-sized panels would measure roughly 11.2 millimeters in thickness, placing the device among the slimmest foldables available.

While Apple has yet to officially confirm a foldable iPhone, the appearance of foldable-specific features in iOS 27 provides one of the strongest indications so far that the company’s long-awaited entry into the foldable smartphone market could be approaching.
