Meta has signed its first AI data center agreement in India, partnering with Reliance Industries to support the growing computing demands of artificial intelligence.

The partnership will see Meta lease capacity at a new 168-megawatt AI-enabled data center being developed by Reliance in Jamnagar, Gujarat. The project marks a significant expansion of the relationship between the two companies, which began with Meta’s $5.7 billion investment in Jio Platforms in 2020.

According to the companies, the facility will be powered by renewable energy and cooled using desalinated seawater. Meta has also agreed to cover the energy and water costs required for its operations at the site.

Expanding AI Infrastructure in India

Reliance said the data center is expected to be operational within two years and can be expanded in the future. The facility will support Meta’s global AI and data center infrastructure needs, integrating India more closely into the company's worldwide AI network.

As part of the agreement, Reliance will provide end-to-end services, including facility design, construction, renewable power, connectivity, and ongoing operations.

The deal comes as India continues to attract major investments in AI and cloud infrastructure. Global technology companies, including Microsoft, Amazon, Google, OpenAI, and Uber have recently announced AI-related investments in the country.

India's installed data center capacity has grown from approximately 375 megawatts in 2020 to around 1.5 gigawatts in 2025, according to government data. Industry estimates suggest that figure could exceed 8 gigawatts by 2030 as demand for AI computing and cloud services continues to rise.

Meta also announced separate agreements with CleanMax and Fourth Partner Energy to secure nearly 1 gigawatt of additional renewable energy capacity in India to support its growing infrastructure requirements. The companies did not disclose the financial value of the agreement or provide details on the specific AI workloads that will be hosted at the Jamnagar facility.
